Rehabilitate a cute shed's roof
—Rehabilitate Not Replace—
We love recovering an old structure. That is especially true when it is a beloved (and cute) old family shed.
Our client was hoping for a quick, inexpensive fix. They're planning on moving in a few years, and don't really use the shed much, but its a cute and functional fixture in the yard that they wanted to save if they could for a limited amount of money.
When we arrived at our client's home, this shed's roof was barely able to be called a roof. It had holes in it, water was coming in. It was in rough shape!
Unfortunately, when things get this bad, there are typically deeper issues to be found beneath those rotting top layers.
Luckily the gable walls were still intact, but the rafters had to be replaced and while the scope of this job was a little more than our client originally bargained for, they ultimately decided to rescue the shed and get it done.
The decision to replace the rafters was a smart one.
While we could have put the roof on the old rafters, the concern was that in the next snow, that roof would just slide off, or collapse. Not safe and not done right. Also, it would have been a huge waste of money for our client to spend the money on a new roof, knowing the bones beneath were on their last legs.
These unexpected costs and decisions are always challenging. Sometimes they can be foreseen, or suspected, and other times you open up something that looks normal to find something horrible underneath.
We always do what we can to work with our clients so they know what the situation is and what options are available to them. When the unexpected happens, we strive to offer multiple solutions for clients to choose from, whether it be tearing it down, a budget friendly safe quick fix, or a full rebuild.
